Guitar Essentials How to Play Barre Chords
Guitar Essentials How to Play Barre Chords Megan L. Learning to play barre chords on the guitar is a big step for many beginning guitarists. Guitar teacher Joe L. breaks down the basic things youll need to know in order to play barre chords and shares tips for practicing them First off, if you dont know the basic open guitar chords you will have tremendous difficulty with these chords. Learning basic rhythm patterns with simple open chords gives you familiarity with different types of chords, how to play chords, and how they sound. Once youve mastered your basic, simple guitar chords, you are ready to take on the challenge of learning to play barre chords. Barre chords are based around the familiar shapes of open chords, but they are fingered in a different way. Barre means you lay your index finger across an entire fret pushing down all the strings, using your other fingers to fret the rest of the chord shape. Barre chords can prove to be difficult to play at first because of the awkward hand position that youre not used to. Yes, they can hurt a little bit but the payoff is huge and very rewarding. These chords are also crucial to playing guitar as they are a major part of learning some songs and part of the technique of guitar playing. Without them you may never fully develop the muscle coordination and strength to play other techniques. Another beautiful thing about barre chords is that once you learn one you can play the same figure across the fretboard, giving you a huge array of chords to play. When youre playing your first barre chord, just hold one down and strum it for a while, adjusting your fingers to make the strings ring out better. Youll want to practice this way at first for two reasons. Firstly, you need practice pushing your fingers down on the strings correctly. Second, you need to build endurance holding these chords down. Many popular songs use barre chords throughout the entire song so for that reason alone you need to be able to endure holding them down. After a while it gets very easy and becomes second nature to use barre chords. Learning barre chords also opens up your ability to play music up and down the fretboard. It shows you how the frets align with one another and gets you to venture out of the comfort zone found in playing open chords. One thing you can do to improve your ability to play barre chords is to switch between barre and open chords. This gives your fingers the dexterity that they need as you progress to becoming a guitar great. Another thing that you can do to improve your ability to use barre chords is to play a barre chord all the way up and down the fretboard. This gives you the muscle strength you need and the coordination to be able to play them on frets that are closer together. Its important to do that as the frets that are higher up the neck are closer together and you need to be able to be comfortable playing these chords in any position on the neck. Learning barre chords can be work but the payoff is huge. Good luck! For more help with barre chords or any other guitar techniques, studying with a private guitar teacher is the best way to learn. Set Up a Study Plan With Your Tutor That Works for You
Set Up a Study Plan With Your Tutor That Works for You Tutoring is an excellent way to learn more in-depth about a particular subject, whether you feel youre falling behind in class or you want to get ahead. Since tutoring is extremely adaptable, its up to you to make your study plan the most effective it can be. Here are a few tips on setting up a plan with your tutor for your best chances of success: 1. Discuss purpose and end goals Before your first tutoring session, talk about your purpose and end goals. Are you trying to catch up or enrich knowledge youve already gained? How much familiarity do you have the subject? It can be helpful to show your tutor recent projects or assessments youve had in the class including specific problems or questions youre struggling with as well as discussing your classroom instructors teaching style. You may need tutoring for an upcoming test, like a school exam, or a standardized test, like the SAT. In that case, youll want to discuss a timeline for being adequately prepared, so that he or she can plan accordingly. 2. Structure your tutoring hour A great aspect of tutoringis the complete freedom to structure it however you and your tutor would like. Discuss any learning strategies that youve found helpful in the past, such as flashcards, practice problems, or timed writing. What kind of learner are you? Do you respond better to visuals, audio, reading/writing, or physical movement? Your tutor may include activities other than your obvious strengths, but this information would also be helpful for him or her to know. Have a conversation about splitting up the actual session time into activities like instruction, independent practice, and review. You and your tutor may even decide that tutoring sessions may look different from week to week. 3. Talk about curriculum and tutoring materials Besides the actual time spent with your tutor, youll want to talk to him or her about teaching and supplementary materials that would work best for sessions. Decide how closely youd like your tutoring time to follow in-class instruction. If youd like a direct correlation to class and homework, you might provide more of the material and ensure your tutor has access (before or during sessions) to your school textbook, workbook, and homework assignments. If youd like to enrich your knowledge with outside material, talk with your tutor about finding an outside text. He or she likely knows of some, and you could also ask your teacher for recommendations. Some subjects or study plans may not even require another text; instead, your tutor may plan activities and instruction without an additional book. 4. Communicate related classroom instruction Tutoring can be an extremely effective way for you to learn concepts and skills alongside regular school work. One key to this is making sure you communicate regularly about what youre working on in class and how your classroom instructor may be teaching specific information. Your tutor will be able to use this knowledge as a foundation for what he or she will practice with you. Also, discuss the pacing of your class and any change in test dates or projects with your tutor. Decide how and in what way youll communicate outside of sessions, whether by text, email, or phone. Talking about the above things with your tutor can set up clear expectations for the both of you, so that you can get the most out of sessions as possible. Dont forget to keep lines of communication open, as your purpose and goals may shift over time. Your tutor will be grateful for this clarity, and you will also benefit from it in the long run.

Powerless or Powerful at Work. Its your choice. - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Powerless or Powerful at Work. Itâs your choice. - Introvert Whisperer Powerless or Powerful at Work. Itâs your choice. Iâm sure we all have experienced the moment when a co-worker (and maybe you as well) has been negatively impacted by decisions management has made. You might be very concerned the most for your friend. Yet, you feel you should do something because of just how unfair the issue is or how serious the impact is. But, you feel powerless to do anything. Many times things happen at work that negatively impacts us or those we work with. We can feel powerless and out of control about a situation. We feel victimized and frustrated because of this sense of powerlessness or we feel that for our co-worker/friends. What should you do? First, you canât go fight for your friend. You can help them, counsel with them but any actions done on behalf of your friend; need to be done by them. Otherwise, you are going to muddy up the situation and if itâs already bad, making things worse isnât helpful. Be a role model of what to do. In other words, you can empower you to take whatever actions you need to do to help improve the situation. Your co-workers can also do the same. Remember, your parents couldnât go fight your fights when you were a kid and the same thing applies now. Many people think when it comes to âmanagementâ that they are powerless to do anything but thatâs simply not true. We are more powerful than we realize and we donât have to turn into a jerk to be that way. Management is people like you and wants the same things out of life and career. Also like you, they donât always know everything they need to know about decisions they make including the impact to you. You see, people are the single biggest resource any business has. Without you and others, there would be no business. That means you have to communicate with management. They need to understand the implications and you canât assume they always know. At the same time, you also have to understand that management has more information on the business and takes a broader view than you do. Itâs their job and with it may come unpopular decisions born out by conditions you know nothing about. You may never know the entire scope of information that goes into any given decision. That means that while a decision might be made that negatively impacts you or others, you do have to place a certain amount of trust that management is making the best decisions they can. Nevertheless, it doesnât mean you shouldnât share your concerns because those concerns might not have been considered. You have to also keep in mind that even if you voice your concerns that the best you can hope for is for management to listen. It may not change anything but they will gain insight from you stepping forward. Itâs okay to hope it influences change. You may not be comfortable being assertive like Iâm suggesting. I know many people arenât but itâs like this: Which is worse? The discomfort of feeling powerless and victimized or the discomfort of stepping forward? LSAT Tip of the Week Analytical Reasoning Practice Problem #3
LSAT Tip of the Week Analytical Reasoning Practice Problem #3 LSAT Law School Blog This week, we will focus on an example of how to setup an analytical reasoning (logic games) question. Our practice question will be from the June 2007 LSAT. This is Section 1, Question 11. A cruise line is scheduling seven week-long voyages for the ship Freedom. Each voyage will occur in exactly one of the first seven weeks of the season: weeks 1 through 7. Each voyage will be to exactly one of four destinations: Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Martinique, or Trinidad. Each destination will be scheduled for at least one of the weeks. The following conditions apply to Freedomâs schedule: Jamaica will not be its destination in week 4. Trinidad will be its destination in week 7. Freedom will make exactly two voyages to Martinique, and at least one voyage to Guadeloupe will occur in some week between those two voyages. Guadeloupe will be its destination in the week preceding any voyage it makes to Jamaica. No destination will be scheduled for consecutive weeks. First, we know there are 7 weeks: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ With 4 possible destinations: G J M T We are also told each one shows at least once: G J M T 1-1-1-1 We can infer that there are 4 weeks of at least one of these, and the 3 extra weeks can be a variety of options (G could be visited 4 times/G could be visited twice and J twice/etc.). Letâs go through the rules now. Rule 1: Jamaica cannot be in week 4 T will be in week 7. _ _ _ _ _ _ T (Note that T can be in another week as well) J =/= 4 Rule 2: M will have exactly two trips at least one G in between the two Ms. M â" G(1 or more) â" M Rule 3: Every J will have a G before it. So, we can infer that GJ must be together at least once. We also know that J cannot be first from this rule. Rule 4: No destination will be in consecutive weeks. Letâs try Question 11: Which one of the following is an acceptable schedule of destinations for Freedom, in order from week 1 through week 7? (A) Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Martinique, Trinidad, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Trinidad (B) Guadeloupe, Martinique, Trinidad, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Trinidad (C) Jamaica, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Trinidad (D) Martinique, Trinidad, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Trinidad (E) Martinique, Trinidad, Guadeloupe, Trinidad, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Martinique We are not given any new information or rules, so we will implement what we have already inferred. First, we know each (GMJT) must appear at least one time. So, letâs quickly go through each option and see if any destinations are missing. All of the options seem to clear this test, so letâs continue. Rule 1 states that T must be in week 7, which is broken in option (e), so we can eliminate that. Rule 1 also states that J cannot be in week 4, which is broken in option (d), so we can eliminate that. Rule 2 states that M will have exactly 2 and there will be at least 1 G between. Going through the options we see that this is violated in option (b), so we can eliminate that. Rule 3 states that every J must have G before it (GJ). And this is violated in option (c), so we can eliminate that. This leaves us with option (a) as the correct choice. In order to continue to prepare for the logic games section of the LSAT, BluePrintLSAT makes a list of other games to play to exercise those important brain muscles in the months or weeks leading up to your exam.
